Abstract

All vessel uses cooling system, either sea water or fresh water. An expansion tank primary function is to detect lost of cooling water in the system due to leakage. When a lost of cooling water occur crew will refill the expansion tank manually via a fixed pipe system. Some cases the expansion tank is equipped with a high level and low level alarm, if the alarm fails over flow or depletion of the expansion tank can occur that can lead to waste of fresh water, damage electrical equipment, engine high temperature and etc. The aim of this paper is to describe a simple design on a low-priced system, and a application of the micro controller unit (MCU) based system. The design is simulated by using Proteus software and then later enforced and tested in the hard ware model. The program has then compiled in PIC C Compilers, and programmed into micro controller using a programmer for PIC 8-bit micro controllers. This paper will offer the development of an automatic system that will ensure the expansion tank level is maintained within permissible level. The model functioned suitably by using simulator software. The vital use of the system is to reduce or to ease the task of the crew members in monitoring these important sections of the vessel, with minimal personnel interference.
